Savana Resort
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Located in the highlands of Munduk, Bali, Savana Resort is conceived as a sanctuary embedded within a landscape of mist, forest, and cascading water. Set between 600 to 800 meters above sea level, the project responds to its elevated terrain and cultural context, where agriculture, ritual, and community life remain deeply intertwined. The architecture positions itself not as a dominant presence, but as a quiet extension of the land, shaping spaces that support retreat, reflection, and renewal.

Architecture

The design is guided by the idea of balance. Drawing from the local philosophy of harmony between nature, people, and spirituality, the resort is envisioned as a sequence of experiences that reconnect the individual with their surroundings. Architecture becomes a medium for slowing down, allowing guests to transition gradually from the intensity of everyday life into a state of calm and clarity.
Rather than creating a singular focal point, the project unfolds as a series of spatial moments, each carefully placed to engage with the terrain, climate, and views. The intention is to preserve the character of Munduk while offering a refined environment that enhances its natural and cultural qualities.

THE SPACE
The masterplan follows the contours of the land, allowing buildings and pathways to adapt to existing topography rather than reshape it. Circulation is designed as a journey, beginning with a gradual arrival sequence that moves through landscape and water elements before opening into key communal and private spaces. Programmatically, the resort is distributed across multiple zones. Wellness facilities are positioned closer to natural water features, allowing architecture to merge with the sensory qualities of sound, humidity, and movement.
Accommodation units are dispersed within the forest, maintaining privacy while framing views toward valleys, treetops, and distant horizons. Shared spaces such as viewing decks and rooftop areas are elevated to capture panoramic vistas, while forest paths and quiet pockets create opportunities for introspection. Each element is connected through a network of pathways that encourage slow movement and continuous engagement with the environment.

THE FEEL
The architectural language is defined by restraint and sensitivity to context. Forms are low, grounded, and responsive to the slope, with materials selected to blend with the surrounding landscape. Natural textures and muted tones allow the buildings to recede visually, while open structures invite light, air, and mist to move freely through the spaces.
Water, vegetation, and atmosphere become integral components of the architecture. Sound, temperature, and filtered light shape the spatial experience as much as walls and roofs. The result is an environment that feels immersive and contemplative, where architecture frames a deeper connection to place rather than competing with it.
