Grande House
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Grande House is a private residence in Bandung, set on a 1,100 m² site with a total built area of 1,456 m². Conceived as a comprehensive architectural and interior undertaking, the project explores the balance between scale and sensitivity, responding both to its expansive frontage and the realities of a dense urban setting. The home unfolds as a series of interconnected volumes, carefully positioned to provide privacy and security while maintaining openness and visual connection to its surrounding.

Architecture

The design seeks to achieve a sense of grandeur without excess and openness without exposure. Rather than relying on singular architectural gestures, the approach embraces layering, allowing materials, form, and landscape to work in quiet cohesion. Each element is considered as part of a larger system that mediates light, air, and privacy, resulting in an environment that feels composed, intentional, and inherently livable. Function is embedded seamlessly within form, creating spaces that are at once practical and expressive.

THE SPACE
The spatial composition is defined by its horizontal expression, anchored by a 56-meter façade stretching across the site. Instead of presenting a solid boundary, the exterior is articulated through perforated metal screens, sun-shading louvers, textured stone walls, and integrated greenery. This layered threshold softens the transition between inside and outside, allowing natural light and airflow to filter through while preserving seclusion.
Internally, the layout balances fluid movement with clearly defined zones. Open communal areas coexist with private, detached spaces, each with direct access to outdoor elements such as gardens, patios, and balconies. Security is integrated subtly through a multi-layered entrance sequence and a dual-boundary approach that responds differently to each side of the property, providing solid protection where needed and more permeable connection where engagement is desirable.

THE EXPERIENCE
Grande House is experienced with quiet clarity. Light moves gently through layered screens, creating a soft, diffused atmosphere throughout the day. Natural airflow carries a sense of calm, reducing reliance on mechanical ventilation. Water features and vegetation introduce subtle shifts in temperature and mood, grounding the interior in its environment.
Over time, the house reveals a rhythm that is both deliberate and relaxed. Its character is not defined by dramatic gestures but by the way it effortlessly supports everyday living, creating a cool, composed, and deeply connected environment where architecture, landscape, and daily life exist in harmonious balance.
