PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Madja Boarding House, completed in 2024, is a modern commercial architecture and interior project in the heart of Bandung, spanning 921 square meters. Designed as a contemporary boarding house, the project responds thoughtfully to its dense urban context while anticipating the evolving needs of its residents.

Despite its compact setting, the building balances efficiency with spatial generosity, accommodating a significant number of occupants while maintaining a sense of openness and comfort. Beyond its functional purpose, Madja Boarding House seeks to subtly reinforce the local identity of West Java, creating a space that is both practical and deeply rooted in its context.

THE VISION

THE VISION

Set within Bandungs vibrant urban fabric, the project embraces an open-living concept, encouraging natural social connection while reflecting the cultural character of West Java. Many residents come from outside the region, and the architecture serves as a gentle anchor to its surroundings, offering familiarity, orientation, and belonging. The design avoids excess, relying instead on clarity, openness, and purpose to define identity. Interaction unfolds naturally through thoughtfully composed spaces, organic, unforced, and responsive to daily life.

THE SPACE

At the heart of the building lies a central communal core, defined by a vertical void linking the second and third floors. This core introduces light, air, and a sense of spatial continuity throughout the structure.A single tree rises within the void, bringing a living element into circulation.

Movement flows around it, creating a sequence of spaces that are simultaneously open and connected. Each room maintains a relationship to this central spine, ensuring natural light and cross-ventilation reach every corner.

THE FEEL

The material palette is simple yet intentional. Concrete provides structural clarity, while locally sourced brick and terrazzo add warmth and durability.

Construction is optimized for efficiency through smaller spans and straightforward detailing. Bathrooms are positioned along the building edges to facilitate airflow, simplify maintenance, and enhance functionality. The result is a boarding house that is practical, resilient, and quietly expressive, where every detail reinforces both purpose and aesthetic.
